Let's learn three Japanese words

One or some Japanese words accompany each English word.

*Choice of script type in Japanese writing: The scripts used most are in the illustration.

This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. It has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori(盆踊り).

The Japanese devil:
Oni(鬼) are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls.
They are popular characters in Japanese art, literature and theatre.

Depictions of oni vary widely but usually portray them as hideous, gigantic creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads.
Their skin may be any number of colors, but red and blue are particularly common.

They are often depicted wearing tiger-skin loincloths and carrying iron clubs, called kanabo(金棒).

This image leads to the expression "oni with an iron club" (oni-ni-kanabo), that is, to be invincible or undefeatable.
