The Okuri-gana is a hiragana letter basically entirely.
The Okuri-gana is located behind a kanji.
There are two kinds of usages of a Japanese Kanji.
1. The thing which makes sense in a kanji simple substance. ( This is "Onyomi".)
- Love, sympathy, pity......" 情 ( jyo ) "
- Blow......................" 打撲 ( daboku ) "
- Notice................... " 通知 ( tsuuchi ) "
2.The thing which does not make sense if there are not 2, kana behind. ( This is "Kunyomi".)

Sympathy, pity...... " 情け ( nasake ) "

Hit................... " 打つ ( utsu ) "
- Go.................... " 通る ( tooru ) "
By the way, the case that Okurigana is used for in katakana is rare.
It seems to have been used now in Japan around 100 years ago.
They are hardly seen now.
Very rare, they are used because of the advertisement etc.
Incidentally ,I introduces the poetry of a famous writer of children's stories in Japan.
This phrase of this "AME - NIMO - MAKEZU" is a posthumous work of "Kenji Miyazawa" of the poet writer who is famous in Japan.
The posthumous work memo that "Ame-nimo-makezu" (I do not lose rain either) was discovered in posthumously of Kenji Miyazawa.

( Without becoming emotional )
ヨクミキキシワカリ
( I look in detail, and hear it.)ソシテワスレズ
( And I do not forget these.)
野原ノ松ノ林ノ蔭ノ
( The shade of the pine wood of the behind.)
小サナ萱ブキ小屋ニイテ
（I live in the hut of the roof of thatch.）
東ニ病気ノ子供アレバ
( And if I hear that there "is a sick child" )
行ツテ看病シテヤリ
( I go to there and nurse a child )
西ニ疲レタ母アレバ
( And if I heard that there was somebody mother whom showed west.)
行ツテソノ稲ノ束ヲ負ヒ
( It reaches her yuan hastily and carries a bunch of the rice
which she carries on her back on my back as a substitute for herthing.)
南ニ死ニソウナ人アレバ
( If I hear that "there is somebody who is in serious condition" at south )
行ツテコハガラナクテモイヽトイヒ
( I go to his yuan hastily and heal it when afraid )
北ニケンクワヤソシヨウガアレバ
( If I hear that there are a quarrel and a lawsuit in the north. )
ツマラナイカラヤメロトイヒ
( I say " Stop such a trifle ".)
ヒデリノトキハナミダヲナガシ
( And I shed tears when I am in the house alone.)
......Do not you somewhat think that it is very heartrending poetry?
He died with 37-year-old youth.
